Green Hydrogen Cost in United Kingdom: What the Press Releases Don't Say

Let's start with numbers, not targets.

United Kingdom's Hydrogen Economics

The UK Hydrogen Strategy (2021, updated 2024) targets 10 GW by 2030, split between green and blue hydrogen — the UK is uniquely positioned for blue hydrogen via North Sea CCS infrastructure (Humber cluster, Teesside). The Net Zero Hydrogen Fund (£240M) has funded 34 projects across the UK. ITM Power (Sheffield) is the UK's flagship PEM electrolyzer manufacturer, with 1 GW/year manufacturing capacity at Bessemer Park. Ceres Power (Horsham) develops SOEC technology. The UK's Hydrogen Allocation Round (HAR-1) awarded 125 MW of electrolytic production. Critical challenge: the UK has no hydrogen pipeline network — HyNet North West is the first planned corridor.

Actual Production Costs in United Kingdom

The green-grey gap is €2.00-5.50/kg. Closing it requires: cheaper electricity, cheaper electrolyzers, higher carbon prices, or subsidies.

Why €2/kg by 2030 Is Unrealistic for United Kingdom

The projections assume electricity at €20-30/MWh and electrolyzers at $300-400/kW. Current UK reality:

• UK renewable PPA prices: €45-65/MWh
• Current electrolyzer installed costs: $800-1,500/kW (PEM), $500-800/kW (alkaline)
• Stack replacement at 60,000-80,000 hours adds €0.30-0.80/kg to lifecycle cost

Where the Economics Work in United Kingdom Today

1. CfD allocation: HAR-1 awarded 125 MW of electrolytic production with revenue support.
2. Blue hydrogen bridge: North Sea CCS infrastructure (HyNet, East Coast Cluster) supports blue H2 at €2.50-4.00/kg.
3. Net Zero Hydrogen Fund: £240M for 34 UK projects.

The Import Question

If green hydrogen costs €4.50-8.00/kg domestically but €2.50-3.50/kg in North Africa, why not import?

• Conversion losses: 25-40% energy lost in ammonia/LOHC conversion

• Net delivered cost: €5.00-7.00/kg — not dramatically cheaper
